CARLA NG / 吳天永
Carla Ng (she/they) is a multidisciplinary artist born and raised in Hong Kong. Director, Noise Maker, Composer+, Pot-stirrer, Professional pretty lights admirer. There is no genre that can categorize Carla; she is the £3.50 meal deal that nobody wants, but everybody needs.
You can find Carla in roles such as director, composer, performer, instrumentalist, filmmaker, editor and visual artist. Carla is currently studying classical composition under Matthew King at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
Carla started composing at the age of five. She was selected as one of the Ten Best Youth Artists at the Youth Artiste Award in 2013. Premiered at GalaMusica: School Creative Works 2018, Carla’s multimedia orchestral work “A Pianist’s Air” won him a scholarship to the Hong Kong Composers Guild Mentorship Scheme 2018 where She studied composition with renowned composer, Mr Hui Cheung Wai. Recently, she was awarded a merit award in the 1st Hong Kong International Composition Competition for Chromatic Harmonica 2021 (ICCCH); for the Chromatic Harmonica with Chamber Orchestra Category.
As a composer, they like to work in different mediums to bend listener expectations. Carla’s work often guides difficult and personal topics through a whimsical and absurdist lens.
On the surface it’s all fun and games but on the inside it’s just therapy baby.
Aside from composition, Carla is also interested in multimedia and theatrical works. Carla is the writer and director of “The World I See”, a blindfolded theatrical experience held during Orbis Week 2019. She is currently working on Illuminated Rivers, a project funded by the City of London.
Carla aims to blend her genre-bending style with their Hong Kong origin, bringing her shenanigans (art) from Sai Ying Pun, to London, then the world.
Carla是一名本地作曲家, 多媒體藝術家和表演者，她自五歲開始接觸音樂，現時在倫敦市政廳音樂及戲劇學院師隨英國作曲家Matthew King修讀作曲。二零一八年，Carla獲頒香港作曲聯會獎學金，並隨知名作曲家許翔威先生學習作曲，她的多媒體作品 “A Pianist’s Air” 隨之於同年在香港沙田大會堂首演。在作曲的道路上，Carla一直探索不同曲風和媒體，她希望能將屬於香港的元素加入她的作品當中， 並把這些音樂從西營盤帶到倫敦，再散播於世界。
